Give underprivileged, sick and disabled children the chance to smile, play and learn in beautiful Eastern Europe.

For many years, conditions in Romania for children in care were far below standard. Years on and there are dramatic improvements, but sadly there are still too few provisions to give children in care the childhood they deserve. Money is limited, which means that staff are pressed for time and stimulation for the children is limited. There are often few toys and hard-pressed staff don't have as much time to play with the children as they'd like - and this is where volunteers can make a genuine difference.

What will I do in Romania?

Since 2003 years we have been working with orphanages, schools, nurseries and children's homes which are crying out for the help and love that volunteers can bring.  We also work with a children's hospital to care for children who are either abandoned there or who are unwell. Some of our projects are specifically geared towards helping kids who are both physically and mentally disabled.

Volunteers need to have a passion for working with children; our best volunteers are caring and not afraid to give and receive plenty of hugs. Your enthusiasm and attention will enable these children to develop, play and enjoy their childhood. Many of our volunteers choose to combine several different projects; working in more than one location adds variety and can enable you to be more productive.

Brasov, the capital of Transylvania in the Carpathians, is a beautiful walled city surrounded by modern suburbs. The area is bursting with fantastic free time activities, from hiking to culture, from history to social life. Dracula's Castle is located nearby, as are some fantastic cities, mountain ranges and historical sights.

You will stay in the centre of the town in a flat, shared with other volunteers, and may share a room. The flat is well equipped with all that you will need to make it home, including wifi.

Oyster Worldwide Orphanage and Childcare volunteering in Romania Reviews

Amazing experience

I loved the routine I was able to get into, and I think that the days were perfectly organised in terms of hours – working in the morning, having a break at lunch time, and then going to the family homes at night. The accommodation was perfect as well – the location is amazing! I honestly can say wholeheartedly that my trip to Brasov was absolutely wonderful, I wouldn’t change a thing. All the information that I was given was so informative and super helpful, and it’s just made the trip so easy and stress free. When I get a chance, I hope I can go on many more placements with Oyster.”

Work experience in Romania

My brother and I were privileged to take part in one of the most informative, interesting and well-designed programs either of us have ever experienced. We were introduced to 6 medical and social welfare organizations and offered unique opportunities with each group. From adolescent orphanages to outpatient medical NGOs, troubled juvenile centres to end of life care inpatient units. Fantastic.

Working with Children in Romania

It was really great to get to work at the hospital and the orphanage, having the mixture was rewarding. Its good to see what a bubble we live in here. The trip was very well organised from both the UK and Romania. Oyster staff have been great.
