Volunteer Teaching Monks in Laos

Company : Oyster Worldwide
Location : Luang Prabang
Duration: 2 weeks to 6 months
Approx Costs: 1250 to 2000 £ Pound (UK)

Head to Luang Prabang - a UNESCO heritage city - to teach monks and local students on this unique volunteering programme.

Buddhism is the main religion in Laos and monasteries care for novice monks until they are 18. Many novice monks are from rural communities which lack educational resources and their families are reliant on the monasteries to provide food, accommodation and education. At aged 18, the monks then choose to stay as a monk or to seek employment.

You will be volunteering as a teacher, helping novice monks and local students to improve their English. This ultimately gives them a greater selection of career paths to choose from if they decide to leave.

You will team teach 2-3 hours a day and spend the rest of the day planning lessons and marking in the resources room. You will receive a few training sessions to help improve your TEFL and planning.

You will live in a shared guesthouse. Three meals a day will be cooked for you and you will get to share communal areas with other volunteers - a great place to relax in the evening.

For a fantastic opportunity to learn about Buddhism first hand - join this rewarding teaching programme.
