Seville is one of the best places in to learn Spanish abroad - here you can enjoy a flamenco show or observe a Holy Week religious ceremony! This is one city you do not want to miss when thinking about studying Spanish in Spain

The Alcazar which is one of the most popular tourist sights was built while Spain was under the rule of the Moors in the 1500s.  It originally functioned as a Moorish fort but was later used as a Royal palace for Spanish royalty.  The gardens are gorgeous year round because of the warm Mediterranean climate.

The Cathedral in Seville is the fourth largest cathedral in the world.  Christopher Columbus is buried there and has a statue dedicated to him.  Walking around the cathedral each altar is different with intricate details.   Make sure you climb to the top of the Giralda or bell tower for a spectacular 360 degree view of the city.  If you think that’s too many stairs for you to climb, you will be relieved to learn that the majority of the tower is actually ramps.  When it was built horses were used to reach the top to ring the bells instead of having someone climb all the way to the top.

Plaza de España and the Maria Louisa Park are the perfect place to take a stroll after a siesta.  The plaza has a huge fountain in front and a pond where you can rent a rowboat, perfect for a sunny day.  As you walk around Plaza de Espana you will notice that each province, in each autonomous community is represented with tiles and pictures that symbolize the community.  This may look familiar because the plaza was part of a scene in Star Wars Episode I and Star Wars Episode II.  If you come back at nighttime the plaza evokes a completely different feeling when it is lit up.

After studying or taking in the sites during the day, a flamenco show is a great way to experience Seville at night.  Flamenco is a type of music and dance popular in Southern Spain.  It’s characterized by its twelve-count dance that expresses emotion.   Alegrias is one type of Flamenco dance that is quicker and characterized as a happy dance while Solea is slower and more somber.  Two of the most popular places to see flamenco are La Carboneria and Casa de la Memoria, both conveniently located centrally in the city.  Usually two show times are offered, one in the early evening and one later at night.

Holy Week in Seville is one of the most important and traditional events in the city.  It is celebrated the week before Easter featuring processions and floats that depict scenes and events from The Passion.  This week is culturally and spiritually important to Sevillanos
