A Guide to Working as a Radiographer Overseas

Radiography Volunteering Work Abroad

On radiography placements and medical electives you will get to working with local doctors and staff helping patients and using x ray machines, CT and MRI scanners.

Due to the nature of the work it is very difficult to find independent medical volunteer programs and you will need to apply through a recognised international company. They offer clinical placements with in-country staff with placement dates all year round. You will get supervision throughout your stay as well as extensive pre-departure support, meals, accommodation and in country support.

On these placements you might be doing any of the following / treating tuberculosis, brain lesions, tumours, breast screening, neuro-cysticercosis, traumatic injury and gross pathology. Usually you will work in a regional government hospital and tend to around 20 patients per day learning new skills and really being able to make a difference to the lives of local people.

The experience of volunteering abroad and hleping in hospitals will be a lot different than what you are used to, you will get a real insight into life in a country you might not have expected.
