How to Volunteer in Ukraine

Volunteer Programs in Ukraine

Ukraine is a very poor destination with a population of around 48 million people, an estimated 1/3 of the population are currently living below the poverty line. Volunteering abroad in Ukraine will probably be the most challenging and rewarding experience of your life. There are local NGO's and also international humanitarian organisations working in Ukraine like Peace Corps who have placed over 2,000 volunteers in the country since 1992. You will usually work Monday - Friday, and there will be lots of time for you to explore and enjoy your new surrounding. You might want to learn basic Ukrainian phrases to help make the experience easier and more enjoyable.

Please note it is best to monitor the current situation on the ground before applying, there are also lots of alternative options like helping Ukranian refugees in nearby countries or donating money to reputable organisations who are helping on the ground.

How You Can Help

There are educational, community based and humanitarian and aid projects currently open to new participants. There are around 100,000 children living in orphanages and you can get involved with the daily routine by teaching, playing games, helping with homework, leading sports activities and offering general assistance where children can aim to improve in a structured environment.

Location of Projects

There are placements throughout the country in cities like Kyiv and also more rural locations like Cherkassy where assistance is needed most. You can also join programs in places like Lviv and Odesa Oblast. Group programs are the most popular option - especially if you are worried about going solo. This country can be a culture shock but you can still find all normal things like television, internet, wifi, shopping centres etc.
